About a month ago, I blogged about two competing film versions of the “Snow White” fairy tale being released in theaters next year (one by Universal Pictures and one by Relativity Media). Since then, the Relativity Media project has finally been given a title — “Mirror, Mirror” — and Universal now has released a trailer for its version of the tale, “Snow White and the Huntsman.” You can watch the trailer here:
Personally, I was impressed with the trailer and the tone it looks like this movie is going to take. It has a darker, “Lord of the Rings” type feel, and Charlize Theron looks like she will make a great (and very menacing) “evil queen.”
This film seems to have borrowed many of the well-known elements of the “Snow White” fairy tale, and then taken the story in an entirely new direction, even showing Snow White in the middle of a battle wearing a full suit of armor. I love the unique portrayal of the evil queen’s famous mirror (the one to which she poses the question, “Who is the fairest of them all?”), and the costumes and special effects already look great. The film also has scored a prime release date, June 1, right at the start of the summer blockbuster season.
“Mirror, Mirror” will be released on March 16, several months earlier, so it’s possible it could steal some thunder from “Snow White and the Huntsman.” But at least for now (no trailer for “Mirror, Mirror” has been released yet), I’m more excited about “Snow White and the Huntsman.” This film appears to have taken a bolder leap with the story and put a slightly more creative spin on the concept.
Yet it’s ultimately going to be up to audiences to decide which of these films is “the fairest of them all” at the box office.
